Picking Up Your Check From Work While Black!

GRAND RAPIDS, MI— A video of a Grand Rapids police WRONGFUL arrest of a Black man outside a McDonald’s restaurant has spurred complaints and a police Internal Affairs investigation.

In the video, workers at the McDonalds — on 28th Street SE near Woodland Mall — can be heard loudly saying the man works at the restaurant and he was there to pick up his check. They said he had just left the restaurant and had been there two hours. He was arrested cause he fit the description.

Police on Wednesday released an initial statement to media:

“GRPD responded to a call of a burglary in progress at a neighboring building. While checking the area officers observed a subject matching the suspect description. Contact was made and the subject was not cooperative, which resulted in his arrest. The investigation is ongoing.”

Court records show warrants have been filed against the man for attempted resisting and obstructing police and malicious destruction of fire or police property. The property destruction charge is a four-year felony.
